July 10th: Asking about three dogs

Late yesterday afternoon Squirrel and I were sitting on the front porch eating some popcorn when a big, white, fluffy dog came to the end of the driveway. He stopped there, looked at us, then turned and walked away. Although I think Squirrel knew I wouldn't let anything happen to him, he went into self-defense mode, and seemed ready to jump away in an instant.

"All right, Squirrel", I said, "What is this all about? That's the third dog in three days to do the exact same thing. They come up the driveway, see me sitting here, and they turn around and leave."

"Well, they're probably all out to get me, but then they see you, and they turn around and run off. We call that big one that just came by Snowball. He thinks he's scary, but he makes too much noise to really sneak up on anyone. Tell me about the other dogs."

"Well, yesterday there was a beagle."

"Ahh, Shortie. Again, not much of a problem. She sure does howl a lot though, and real loud too."

"The other one was a husky with a blue eye and a brown eye, with one ear that stands straight up and the other one that bends over half-way up. And his hair stands straight out like he's just been electrocuted."

"Ah, that's Crazy Eyes. You've got to watch out for him. He gets that look in his eyes and you just need to get out of his way. Some times he just spins round and round chasing his tail."

"Well, they all seem pretty well-trained. They just roam around without really causing any problems. They wouldn't be allowed to do that in the Lower-48."

"Sure, they act all nice when a human is around, but if they know you're not around, bam, they'll chase anything that moves."
